Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The results of the Gujarat Assembly by-elections, declared on Monday, show a split verdict with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing the Visavadar seat and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retaining its stronghold in Kadi. These by-polls were closely watched as indicators of political sentiment in the state.
In Visavadar, located in Junagadh district, AAP's former state president Gopal Italia emerged victorious, defeating BJP's Kirit Patel by a margin of 17,581 votes. Congress candidate Nitin Ranpariya came in a distant third. The by-election in Visavadar was necessitated by the resignation of AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani in December 2023, who subsequently joined the BJP. This win is crucial for AAP, as it helps them reclaim a seat that had previously shifted from being a BJP bastion under former chief minister Keshubhai Patel to an AAP constituency in 2022.
Meanwhile, in the Kadi constituency, a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat in Mehsana district, BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda secured a significant win. He defeated Congress candidate Ramesh Chavda by a margin of 38,904 votes, ensuring the BJP retained this long-standing bastion. The by-poll in Kadi was held following the unfortunate demise of BJP MLA Karsanbhai Solanki in February 2025.
The voter turnout for these constituencies was 56.57% in Visavadar and 57.90% in Kadi. With these results, the composition of the 182-member Gujarat assembly now sees the BJP holding 161 seats, Congress 12, and AAP retaining its four seats (Dediapada, Jamjodhpur, Botad, Gariadhar), along with Samajwadi Party one and two Independents.
